support for therapists working with anxiety & OCD

Feeling overwhelmed?

Working in private practice has many benefits, but it can also feel isolating—especially when you’re supporting clients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and want to make sure you’re providing effective, evidence-based care. When you don’t specialize in OCD, it can be difficult to know what is most helpful, what may unintentionally reinforce the cycle, and how to approach treatment with confidence.

OCD is a nuanced and often misunderstood condition. It can present in ways that are easy to miss, and many well-intentioned interventions, such as cognitive restructuring, problem-solving, challenging to intrusive though, or “processing” the thought, can inadvertently strengthen symptoms. Effective treatment often involves understanding how obsessions and compulsions operate and how to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in a thoughtful and targeted way.

Consultation offers a supportive space to think through complex cases, strengthen your conceptualization skills, and build confidence in treating OCD. Whether you are a therapist who occasionally works with OCD, a clinician hoping to deepen your understanding, or a student looking to develop competence in this area, consultation can help you bridge the gap between theory and practice and feel less alone in the work.

What is consultation?

Let’s start here: consultation is not supervision. There is a distinct difference between the two that is important to highlight:

  • Supervision: support provided from a more experienced clinician who can provide expert guidance, mentorship, training, and feedback. The end goal is to support the clinician to learn and grow.

  • Consultation: support provided by a peer who can provide their opinion, act as a sounding board, and help clinicians problem solve complex and challenging clinical situations.

In other words, supervision helps us learn from experts and grow as therapists, consultation helps us navigate challenges with unbiased outside support. If you’re in solo private practice, both are important in their own ways.

Consultation can often be accessed through peer groups which tend to meet monthly and may have a rotating schedule for presentations. With this form of consultation, therapists have an opportunity to present a case and seek support 2-4 times per year.

If you don’t have access to a peer group or need more time to process a particular issue or concern, it may be worth your while to book a peer consultation session.
